Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters. SmartList collects only what’s needed to provide the service and never sells your data to third-parties.

OVERVIEW

What is SmartList?

SmartList is a grocery planning app built by SmartVibes (smartvibes.com.au). It helps you plan weekly grocery shops, track spending, plan meals, and share lists with your household.

SmartList requires an account. You can sign in with Google, sign in with Apple, or register with an email address and password. Your lists sync across your devices and can be shared with family.

DATA WE COLLECT

Information collected when you sign in

When you create an account or sign in we receive and store:

  • Your email address
  • Your name, if supplied by your sign-in provider (Google or Apple)
  • Your profile photo URL, if provided by Google
  • A unique user ID for your account

You can sign in with Google, sign in with Apple, or register with an email address and password. With email/password registration we only receive the email you provide. This information is stored securely in Google Firebase, operated by Google LLC.

APP DATA

Information you create in the app

When signed in, the following data is stored in Firebase Firestore under your account:

  • Your weekly grocery lists and items
  • Your grocery quantities and store assignments
  • Archived weeks and shopping history
  • Meal plans and ingredient lists
  • Custom item library, recurring items and templates
  • Budget settings and week notes
  • Household members you’ve invited to check lists

A copy of your data is also cached on your device so the app keeps working offline; changes sync to your account when you’re back online.

SHARING

Contacts and sharing

When you add a contact, share a week, or join a team, your display name and email are shared with the people you connect with so they can recognise and collaborate with you. Contact requests and team membership are stored on your account. You can remove contacts or leave teams at any time.

PERMISSIONS

Device permissions

  • Camera — for scanning barcodes, scanning handwritten or digital grocery lists and receipts, and attaching photos to items. Images you scan are sent to Google Cloud Vision and Google Gemini for text extraction only and are not stored by Google. Photos you attach are uploaded to Google Cloud Storage for your account (at Camera or Premium feature).
  • Microphone — for voice input of item names. Voice is processed on-device only.
  • Photos Library — to attach gallery photos to grocery items.
  • Siri — to find nearby stores using your location.
  • Calendar — to add your shopping date as a calendar event. We do not read your existing calendar events.
  • Notifications — to send shopping reminders. You can disable these at any time in Settings.

THIRD PARTIES

Third party services

SmartList uses the following third-party services:

  • Google Firebase — sign-in, cloud database (Firestore) and photo storage. Governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
  • Google Cloud Vision & Google Gemini — text extraction from images you choose to scan. Images are not stored after processing.
  • Google Sign-in — account authentication only.
  • Apple Sign-in — account authentication only, only when you choose to sign in with Apple.
  • Google Maps Platform — store search and maps. Your search text is sent to Google to return nearby store results.
  • Open Food Facts — barcode product lookup.
  • Google Play & RevenueCat — Premium subscription processing. We never receive your payment card details.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with advertisers or any other third parties. SmartList uses no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs and collects no advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking data.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

Subscriptions and payments

SmartList offers an optional paid “Premium” subscription. Purchases are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and managed through RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous subscriber identifier to verify your subscription across your devices.

We never receive or store your card or payment details — these are handled entirely by the app store.

USAGE STATISTICS

Anonymous usage statistics

To understand how the app is used and improve it, we compute anonymous, aggregate usage statistics — such as how many people use SmartList each week and how many lists are scanned — from your account data.

These are simple counters and dates (for example, when your account was created and last active, and how many lists we compute you’ve scanned) stored on your account and rolled up into anonymous totals. They are never linked to you, never sold or shared, and involve no third-party analytics SDKs.

You can turn this off at any time in Settings → Privacy Policy → Share anonymous usage stats.

CRASH REPORTS

Crash reporting

When the app crashes, we capture the technical error details (the error message and code stack trace) along with your app version and device type, to automatically identify the bug.

Crash reports are stored on our Firebase project — not a third-party crash reporting service — and never include the contents of your lists. You can turn automatic crash reporting off in Settings → Privacy Policy → Send crash reports automatically.

YOUR RIGHTS

Your data rights

You have full control over your data:

  • Export — use Settings → Data Management → Export / Backup Data to download a backup of all your data.
  • Delete — use Settings → Account → Delete Account & All Data to permanently remove your account and all associated data from our servers.
  • Sign out — sign out at any time from Settings → Account; your data remains safely in your account.

SECURITY

Data security

Your data is stored in Google Firebase with security rules that ensure only you (and household members you explicitly invite) can access your data. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest and run by Google.

We never see your Google or Apple password, and any email/password you register is managed securely by Google Firebase Authentication — we cannot see it.

CHILDREN

Children’s privacy

SmartList is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

UPDATES

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via the app. Continued use of SmartList after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
